When a Side Project Becomes the Main Character (Author Life Chaos, Exhibit A)

So here’s the thing about being a creative person: sometimes the thing you meant to dabble in — like say, just something you’re thinking about while lying under an ice pack recovering from heat exhaustion— decides to kick down the door and take over your whole creative brain.

I was supposed to be doing the cover reveal for Escaping the Omega Bond this week and sewing dragons for a Renaissance faire. That was the plan. I had a marketing calendar and everything But the universe had other ideas. Specifically: a shiny new idea I had zero intention of working on yet… that is now absolutely eating my life.

It’s sequel to Familiar Ground — the companion story to ETOB that follows Layla (a side character from Aura’s story) and explores what happens at Hunter’s Moon after Aura escapes. That book gave me my sapphic slow-burn fix and a taste of the pack’s recovery arc. I finished writing it earlier this summer, and now it’s aging in the story cave- I like to let things sit for at least 6 weeks after finishing them before I pull them out to start edits and re-writes, so they’re fresh to me. Other than trying to decide when I want to launch it and shopping for a cover artist, I haven’t touched it in a couple of weeks.

Enter: a brand new couple. A lone-wolf crisis PR specialist with a back pocket full of secrets and a policy of not caring about pack drama… and a rising fitness influencer who’s built her brand on authenticity, community, and self-empowerment — all while hiding one major thing:

She’s an Omega. And none of her millions of followers know it. Not because she’s pretending to be human, but because she’s done such a good job of hiding it that despite being one of the most famous shifter influencers in the Lunaverse, that no one knows it. She’s hiding her entire dynamic while becoming the face of accessible wellness for a generation of empowered shifter women. And when her carefully curated world collides with a man who knows her secret, who she never thought she’d see again… well.

So while the ETOB cover reveal is (sadly) delayed, I’m pouring all that anticipation into this messy, magnetic, trope-laced follow-up I wasn’t planning to write — but clearly need to.

More on that soon. For now, just know I’m writing secret identities, emotional landmines, and the spiciest second-chance chemistry I’ve ever written in my life. I normally write slow-burn and this ain’t it.

Escaping the Omega Bond finally has a launch date – 10/15/25 – and I’m looking for ARC readers! if you’re interested in that, the signup is here!

In the meantime? I’ve got a new story launching in serial form – one new chapter every Friday- on Patreon!

And of course, I’m working hard on the sequel to Escaping the Omega Bond. I’m about 20% of the way in, I don’t know the title yet (although I’m aiming for a spring 2026 release!) and I’ve just gotten to the first steamy scene that everyone has waited so long for!

ETOB was meant to be a steamier story than it ended up. (As witness the original Vella’s cover.) But as I got further along (and especially as I re-wrote it. Twice.) I really felt like the physical development of Aura’s relationship with the guys *had* to be a fairly slow burn to true to the character she was, and the amount of trauma she’s carried from her childhood forward, in ways she’s not even really started to deal with. So that’s something I’m working with, and that I hope my readers enjoy. I mean, who doesn’t like a steamy explicit consent scene? But at the same time… Aura’s got a lot of stuff to figure out, and so do the guys.

My timer’s gone off, so it’s back to Word for me. But I’m going to try and update here more often.

So, Kindle Vella is going away. All my stories started there, and I’m grateful that it existed. But what does this mean for my stories?
Welp. If you unlocked them on Vella, you’ll retain access in your Kindle after Vella goes down later this year. But I’m hoping to put them out in regular Ebook format later this year. Everything’s getting some re-writes, and I’ll post more news as it becomes available. Scout should be available in March or April, Omega Bond in May or June, and Wolves of the King sometime in the fall.

I’m excited to say that in April, I finished my first-ever book – Escaping the Omega Bond! Currently available on Kindle Vella in serial format, I’m currently editing it, and it will be released in ebook and paperback later this year!

I posted a total of 9 chapters to Kindle Vella this month

1 for Escaping the Omega Bond
2 for ETOB 1.5 “Layla’s Story”
6 for Her Scout from the Stars – including my first-ever steamy scene!

I wrote a grand total of 12354 words for the month, not counting outlines, revisions, or secret projects!

Indie publishing is a new game, and honestly, I didn’t ever imagine myself in this spot. While I’ve always enjoyed creating and telling stories, I didn’t think I had the ability to write finished pieces that anyone would actually want to read. I’m learning as I go – on the writing, but also on the surrounding skills that I need to keep the wheels from falling off when it comes to publishing. This week, I’ve been teaching myself about newsletters!

Is it spring yet?

Life at just shy of 9000′ isn’t quite like living on another planet – but sometimes it feels like it. This week, my grandparents’ farm (just shy of a thousand miles south and east of us) is seeing highs into the 80s, and my mother is talking about the blackberry harvest she expects to have next month. Up here? It snowed again this morning (with more predicted tonight!). I love where we live, but I’m definitely ready to get some plants into the ground – which I can’t do until it warms up a little more consistantly.

So instead of planting tomatoes and pruning seedlings, I’m planting future stories and pruning existing ones into shape. Escaping the Omega Bond is complete in it’s initial format (available now on Kindle Vella – a serial platform by Amazon). While I did edit as I went, I’ve found the usual rocks in the garden (mostly in the form of continuity errors. Poor Mal had two hair styles and colors at different points in the story that took place about 48 hours apart. Oops.) and fixed the glaring ones, but mostly left it intact. Now that I’m preparing to publish it in book form, the main changes will be expansion on some of the different emotional notes that I didn’t hit as hard as I wanted the first time through. It’s an interesting experience and I hope I learn as much from each subsequent story I finish! The perspective from above- reading a story end to end- is just plain different from what you can see writing individual chapters or segments.

At the same time I’m editing ETOB, I’m also outlining The Alpha’s Dilemma, which is the second book in the story of Mountain Call Pack. The initial crisis that brought Aura into the boys’ lives is resolved, but that resolution has brought new problems – and Aura’s secure in her new position, but with new responsibilities and challenges that she never anticipated. The relationships continue to develop, and well… there’s more exciting stuff yet to come.
